Eating Out

Sometimes you just don’t have time to cook….or you just don’t feel like it.  There are so many good restaurants out there and trust me we have eaten at many of them!  Here is a running list of our favorite places - near and far - to get a great meal, snack, dessert, you name it.  This is just a start…as we discover more I’m sure you will see them in our blogs.

Kaua’i

  • Hamura’s Saimin, Lihue: Simply put, there is no saimin like Hamura’s…just don’t touch the underside of the counters or you’ll be in for a surprise!
  • Kalaheo Coffee and Cafe, Kalaheo: Healthy, fresh, delicious breakfast, lunch AND dinner…and you get to see everyone you know, all in one place.
  • Pomodoro, Kalaheo: You haven’t lived until you have had the fresh baked bread here and the Cannelloni you really haven’t lived.
  • Koloa Fish Market: Walk in, stand in line to the left, figure out what you want real quick (everything is fresh and amazing but if you really need pointers call my dad, he knows the rotating menu by heart), pay, leave promptly and enjoy at the beach.
  • Brick Oven Pizza, Kalaheo: Hands down, best pizza on earth; I dare anyone to challenge me on this.  Fun for kids because you can watch them make the pizza right there and if you ask they give you a ball of dough to play with (we ate them) while you wait.

Boulder, CO

  • Sushi Zanmai: Amazing sushi, appetizers, entrees, sake, you name it! I worked here in college as a hostess and day server and was known to order a few rolls to take home at the end of my shifts. Must tries here are- The Boulder Roll, Z-9 roll, Z-6 roll, Caterpillar roll, I could go on and on! On Saturday nights they stay open late for karaoke. Don’t miss the Sake Bar next door for unique drinks and traditional Japanese fare. www.sushizanmai.com
  • Jax: Fresh fish and excellent cocktails and wine. Pricy, but definitely worth it! Try the calamari and oysters for appetizers. My personal favorite entree is the Spicy Colossal Shrimp. http://www.jaxfishhouseboulder.com
  • The Rio: Here you will find quite possibly the best margaritas in Colorado! With several locations throughout the state, this is a popular happy hour and dinner location. Be careful- the drink limit is 3 margaritas! www.riograndemexican.com
  • The Med: Tapas, tapas, tapas! This is another favorite for happy hour and a great place to get together with friends. Known for their huge tapas menu, the outdoor patio is a fun place to see and be seen in the summer months. http://www.themedboulder.com/
  • Centro: Owned by the same restaurant group as Jax, Centro features a spicy, latin style menu and fabulous drinks. This is definitely a hot spot to go for happy hour or drinks with friends. http://www.centrolatinkitchen.com

Denver, CO

  • Sushi Hai: Can you sense my sushi addiction? :) Sushi Hai is by far my favorite sushi restaurant. Located in the Highlands of Denver, it is always a busy and has a crowd, so be prepared to wait. There is a huge bar area where you can have drinks, listen to a DJ play music, or even play pool. In my opinion, the best rolls here are the crunchy (shrimp tempura with avocado, aioli, and tempura bits), the Hai Roller (white fish, avocado, and a spicy seasoning on top), and the Hamapan (white fish again with cilantro on top). We have been known to order 6+ rolls here and eat them all!
  • Benny’s Mexican: Looks like a total dive bar, but is home to Denver’s best Mexican food. Fresh, fast, and inexpensive is how I would describe Benny’s. The restaurant is always packed, but we have never had to wait more than 15 minutes. Their margaritas are tasty and strong enough that you can have quite a few!
